Below I document resources and tips I have given to PhD students.
During the PhD
- Twenty things I wish I’d known when I started my PhD by Lucy Taylor. My favorite part: “I don’t need to write that down, I’ll remember it” is the biggest lie you can tell yourself! Write down everything you do — even if it doesn’t work. This includes meeting notes, method details, code annotations, among other things.
- How to Get Strangers to Help you by Annie Chen; Great advice on how to ask for help from people you don’t know.
Finding a job:
Job postings and post doc announcements (which in the US tend to be pretty ad hoc and often occur when a faculty member has a specific project). I encourage all PhD students to sign up for these listserves, even many years prior to looking for a job, as they help you keep a pulse on the field.
These announcements are posted on INFORMS connect:
the INFORMS job board:
and the IEFac listserve (anyone can sign up – you do not need to be an IE faculty)
